  New Start-Rewardfrequencies

At the Clinical Summit that EEG Info USA held in July the newest developments were presented. Philippe Gaufrriau attended the event:

The major change in protocols is that the starting frequency in the 1- and 2-channel protocols is now 0.5 mHz HD for T4-P4 and also for T3-T4.

In detail: The optimum reward frequency of the patient is determined in the first session. Depending on symptoms we start at T3-T4 or at T4-P4. At the summit Sue Othmer again mentioned that for some clients both placements may be necessary in the first session. Regardless of the placement we start at 0.5 mHz HD and optimize the reward frequeny from there. If symptoms of too high arousal appear then we lower the frequency (normally in steps of 0.1 mHz HD).
If symptoms of too low arousal appear then we increase the frequency. If the client does not report changes we lower the frequency in order to find the lowest optimum frequency as long as no symptoms of underarousal appear.

Please note: This is the procudure for NEW clients. If you have already found the optimum reward frequency for a client, you do not change it.

Problem: Rocket/butterfly always flies slowly in InnerTube

The general rule is that the rocket must finish the level before the time runs out. However, time bonifications are possible through the collection of diamonds. Thus, to complete a level one must a) fly fast enough (reward), plus b) hit diamonds to collect time bonifications (inhibits - if rocket control is set to "Autopilot", the precision of the autopilot depends on the inhibits).

Because the velocity of the rocket mainly depends on the reward-level, it is just normal that velocity is slow when reward is low. However, sometimes it happens that the rocket is slow despite a high reward level. In the majority of such cases, pending windows-updates have been shown to be responsible for the “slow motion” behavior of the rocket/butterfly.

If the problem - after all important windows-updates have been installed - still persists, it often helps to update the video driver (i.e. driver of the graphic card).

Tip - Windows 10 and Cygnet

At the moment Microsoft is offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 and many users are asking themselves whether they should follow this offer and what this would mean for their Neurofeedback system.

Background
For all users with a Windows 7 or 8.1 operating system, Microsoft is offering a free upgrade to Windows 10. This offer is valid for one year, i.e. until July 29, 2016.

Our Recommendation
From our experience of the past 20 years, we recommend to wait with an update at least until the first "Service Pack" has been released, which usually takes about one year. This strategy is the best way to avoid all the troubles that usually come with the "ripening process" of a Microsoft product.

Furthermore, we don't recommend to change the operating system at all; the prices for new computers are so low that it is not worth the efforts that are required to install a new operating system (unless you enjoy tinkering with PCs).

But what to do when the favorite store only offers computers with Windows 10 as operating system? We recommend to be patient and look for further offers. It is still possible to get new computers with Windows 7 - an operating system that is supported by Microsoft until the year 2020.

However, please note that the Microsoft offer for a free update to Windows 10 is valid until the end of July 2016.

What about Windows 10 & Cygnet?
Initial tests have shown that Cygnet probably will run without problems in a Windows 10 environment. However, Cygnet is not yet approved for Windows 10. We are working on that but we will not release Cygnet for Windows 10 until the operating system is reasonably stable and until the drivers have been qualified.

How to get rid of the bothersome "Windows 10 Update" notification in the task bar?
Recently, Microsoft has released an Update "KB3035583", which was classified as "important" and thus, was automatically installed on most computers. This update leads to the permanent appearance of the "free Windows 10 update" offer in the Windows task bar. To get rid of this advertisement, either ask your PC-Supporter or open the Update Center and uninstall "KB3035583".
